They Need Somebody to Talk with - Relationships among Exposure to Suicide, Conversation Companion, and Suicidal Ideation

Abstract
Despite recent global research trends of the effect of exposure to suicide, there has been little systematic study on this topic domestically. There is a lack of studies on moderators as suicide interventions compared to considerable studies on the main factor affecting suicidal ideation, and there is an urgent need for those studies in Korea where its suicide rate is high. For this purpose, we analyzed the WAVE I data of the first nationwide large size longitudinal study about suicide survivors in Korea ¡®Trajectory Study on Mental Health of Suicide Survivors Who Were Exposed to Suicide in Social Relationships¡¯(N = 2000) to examine the moderating effect of conversation companion as a social support structure on the relationship between exposure to suicide and suicidal ideation. The results showed that, those exposed to suicide in their social relationships had higher levels of suicidal ideation compared to those not. The moderating effect of presence of conversation companion was statistically significant, that is, it had a buffering effect between exposure and suicidal ideation. Based on these findings, the role of conversation companion as an intervention for suicide survivors is discussed from formal and informal dimensions.
